#Mug #54 - The process

Day 54

Here is #Mug #54 - The process

I like to talk about the process of making of a mug.
How long it takes from throwing or hand building a mug until the completed fired mug. This process can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks. It really all depends on how many mugs I make and how many mugs can fit into your kiln.

Here is a straightforward breakdown of the process for each mug:

1. Starting to wedge the clay anywhere from 3-5 mins
2. Throw a mug can take from 10-15 min.
3. 10 mins for turning
4. Trimming 3-5 minutes
5. Making and attaching the handle 5-10 minutes
6. Cleaning up the mug 3-5 min
7. The drying time 5 days to 2 weeks; it depends on the type of clay and season. Humidity plays a big role in the drying process.
8. Bisque firing (currently outsourced)
9. Sanding may be required to make sure the foot looks good and to eliminate any throwing lines.
10. I take anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour decorating each mug - this can be a simple glaze, underglaze transfers, and painting the mug, which takes much longer.
11. Cleanup and waxing the bottom
12. Glaze firing (currently outsourced)
13. Taking pictures of the final mug - 10-30
